I support immigrants and immigration

I support today’s protests by those who believe that it should never be a felony to be an illegal immigrant in the United States. I support nationwide amnesty for illegal immigrants. I support the creation of guest-worker programs. I support giving immediate family members first priority and fast-track status when they apply for residency, asylum, work visas, or citizenship.

I support the fast-tracking of visas for foreign artists, musicians, and academics.

I support the new Spanish-language version of the national anthem, Nuestro Himno. It sounds great! I think this man is a jackass.

I think the Spanish version of the National Anthem sounds beautiful - powerful and moving. I was raised in the military and am very patriotic. I love the national anthem, it always brings me to tears. I don’t think it’s “sacred”, however, and even if it was, we’ve certainly translated other sacred texts and lyrics in order to reach more people.
One of the important qualities of the United States is supposed to be our hospitality, welcoming people to a place where they can also enjoy freedom and justice - singing the national anthem in their language seems to me to be a way to include them and welcome them.
Anyone who thinks we are a single-language nation has never spent time in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas or South Florida, or any big American city. (Or they just aren’t paying attention!)There are plenty of other pockets of population in this country where languages other than English are spoken. And many other nations in the world speak more than one language. Time for us to catch up and actually teach our children to speak more than one language, starting when they are babies.
America is more beautiful because of diversity, English has been enriched because of the inclusion of words from other languages.

Looks like that man used to be quite fond of singing the National Anthem in Spanish!

Dear Sir,

I’ve just finished my M.A. in Lexicography. I’m a portuguese Linguist and I’m trying to move to L.A.. I was researching about Lexicography and found your Blog and i just couldn’t help sending you a message, sorry!
Do you think that i will be able to survive in this country if I try, at the same time, to be a Lexicographer and an Immigrant? Do you think that there is a real possibility of success in my case?

thank you so much for everything… today i needed some hope and here you are!!

The best advice I have for you is to make sure you’re subscribed to LinguistList (http://www.linguistlist.org/) for its job postings. That’s where you’re most likely to find work. Good luck!
