Dictionary definition of “–ting”

–ting

suffix denoting an activitity related to dating. Subjects: ,
Etymological Note: 팅 < Eng. meeting.
Citations: 2003 Adam Morris @ Tianjin, China Brainysmurf (Sept. 13) “I have a work difficulty update”: “Mee-t’ing” or simply “t’ing.” A blind date. Sometimes a “so-gae t’ing” (lit. “introductory date"). Some folks used to speak jokingly of “eh-rae-bae-i-taw t’ing,” or a romantic encounter in an elevator, a la Aerosmith(?). 2003 J. Scott Burgeson Koreanstudies maling list (Dec. 28) “[KS] re: “Chousenshi kenkyuukai ronbunshuu,” no. 41 (2003)”: Adding or using the English gerund suffix “-ing” (or “-ting") is quite common in Korean/Konglish, from “sogaeting” to “phone-ting” to “meeting” (group blind date). It just makes more sense logically when referring to activities. 2004 Joe Yong-hee, Ines Cho, Kim Soo-young JoongAng Daily (Seoul, South Korea) (May 18) “Lexicon of love adapts to times”: As dating became less and less formal, the “-ting” ending was used to describe these new styles of courtship.
