Dictionary definition of “Super-Duper Tuesday”

Super-Duper Tuesday

n. a day that many US states hold primary elections in which political parties choose their candidates for the presidential election to be held the following November; Tsunami Tuesday. Subjects: , ,
Editorial Note: “Duper” serves as an informal superlative via reduplication of “super.” Super-Duper Tuesday is so named because more primaries would be held on that day than have been held in previous years on Super Tuesday, possibly making later primaries irrelevant by establishing strong front-running candidates before the parties’ conventions later in the year.
Citations: 1985 Thomas D. Elias Mountain Democrat and Placerville Times (California) (Apr. 3) “California focus” p. 4: If Californians are lucky, Super Duper Tuesday could fall just about three years from today. Super Tuesday, you’ll remember, came early last March, when six states held their primary elections and, in effect, took California out of the presidential nomination process even though their combined population and delegate count barely matched California’s. 1986 Paul Taylor Washington Post (Mar. 8) “DNC Expected to Pass Rules for 1988 Today Kirk Questions Shift to Earlier Primaries”: As Kirk pitched the rules proposed by the Fairness Commission at four regional DNC caucuses yesterday, he also said critics of a move to create a “super-duper Tuesday” of primaries and caucuses in early March were sounding a “false alarm” and questioned whether all states talking about moving their dates would actually do so. 2000 Morton Kondracke Ardmoreite (Oklahoma) (Mar. 29) “A better way to pick nominees”: Under this plan, nearly half of each party’s convention delegates would be selected on a Super Duper Tuesday in May instead of 37 percent in this year’s March 7 Super Tuesday. 2004 Jonathan Alter Newsweek (Feb. 16) “Let Them Eat a Bit More Cheese”: But if Kerry is crowned in Wisconsin, then Super-duper Tuesday (essentially a national primary on March 2) will be a low-turnout bore when it could be another injection of excitement. 2007 Waco Tribune (Texas) (Mar. 28) “Editorial: Do we really need Super-Duper Tuesday?”: Texas lawmakers want in on Super-Duper Tuesday. That’s what some people call next year’s Feb. 5 presidential primary. It just added California to Arkansas, Delaware, Missouri, Oklahoma and Utah. New Mexico Democrats and West Virginia Republicans will also have contests on that date.
