Dictionary definition of “slump buster”

slump buster

n. an unattractive woman sought by a man for sexual relations in order to improve his sports-playing abilities or his involuntarily inactive sex life. Subjects: , , , ,
Etymological Note: This is a very specific sense of the more general slump buster ‘something perceived to stop a losing streak, improve sports performance, or to increase sexual activity.’ This sense’s recent popularity stems from a 1998 interview on Jim Rome’s syndicated sports talk show with Mark Grace, former first baseman for the Chicago Cubs, although the term is older than that.
Citations: 1994 [Ed Threet] Usenet: rec.sport.football.college (July 11) “A Midsummers Night’s Dream”: As I made my way to my seat I was accosted by a very large and ugly UF gal (also very drunk) who claimed she “knew me from somewhere.” As I tried to be cordial to her and tell her that I’m sure she was mistaken since I had attended U of Ala. my mind raced.…was she one that I may have spent some “quality’ time with after 2 six-paks during a spring break trip of long ago? Maybe she had done some undergraduate wark in T-town and she was what we used to call a slump-buster? 1998 Terry May Usenet: alt.fan.jim-rome (July 12) “Re: Get ready for a beating”: Are you a slump-buster? Anyone jump on a grenade for the boys, with you lately? 2001 Robert Lipsyte New York Times (Oct. 7) “Spoiled Athletes Have Syndrome All Their Own” p. 15: We may have to go to strength here, to the wives of our professional athletes, the women who deal with reality every day while their husbands entertain us with their games and themselves with their “slump-buster” groupies. 2003 Dan Mcgraw Hamilton Spectator (Ontario, Can.) (Aug. 7) “All in the game” p. B1: Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Grace commented a few years ago on Jim Rome’s sports radio show about the concept of the “slump buster.” When a batter is going through a hitting slump, Grace said the player must find an ugly (and preferably fat) woman. Sleep with her, toss her aside and, voilà, the slump is over. It’s called “diving on a live grenade,” Grace joked. [2004 Jim Collins The Last Best League (Apr. 1) p. 68: D’Antona, for his part, had tried a time-honored method of busting out of his slump. He’d been flirting with a couple of girls he’d met, and his teammates ragged him about it, urging him to go for it with one or the other.…Jamie had gone for it with C——, and she’d said yes, and the whole team knew about it. He had two walks in the game and hit the ball hard twice, one of them a bullet to left-center for a standing double. Down the rightfield line, the bullpen guys went crazy. “Slump BUSTER!” they yelled.] 2005 Maureen Dowd International Herald Tribune (Feb. 21) “Back to beauty and the beast”: “God, I’m 0-for-20. I’m going to get the ugliest girl I can find and have sex with her.”…Many of his fellow athletes did seek out “slump busters.”…“It could mean the woman was big, or ugly, or a combination of both,” Canseco explains. He said that golden boy Mark Grace, the former Chicago Cubs first baseman, who seems like the kind of nice guy and good sport you’d want to bring home to mom, defined a slump buster as making out with the “fattest, gnarliest chick you can uncover.”
