Dictionary definition of “skull-crusher”

skull-crusher

n. a weight-lifting exercise in which one lies face upward on a bench and uses the arms to extend barbells above the face and head. Subjects: , , ,
Citations: 1992 Edward Connors Gold’s Gym Mass Building Training and Nutrition System (April 1) p. 141: Incline Barbell Triceps Extension…Do not bounce the weight off of your forehead (someone once undoubtedly did, because many bodybuilders call this movement skull crushers). 1992 [Luther Miller] Usenet: misc.fitness (July 23) “Triceps Exercises”: I have been doing “nosebreakers” (AKA skullcrushers—great names for this exercise…), dips, and close grip bench press for my TRIs and it seems that my inner tris (higher up in the back of my arm) are growing at a great pace, but the outer tris aren’t responding much. 1997 Craig Hartglass Muscle & Fitness (Feb. 1) “Armed intensity” vol. 58, no. 2, p. 138: Mike uses dumbbells instead of an EZ-bar, lowering them straight back (simultaneously) under complete control before exploding back up to, full extension and sueezing the triceps hard. “The key is to make sure that the triceps are doing all the work,” he says. “I go really heavy; the movement is explosive but totally isolated on my triceps. You have to be really careful here—they’re called skull crushers for a reason.” 2006 Jeff Thayer Hamptons Online (Sept. 20) “Real Deal: Arm Yourself”: An exercise like lying extensions or, “scull crushers,” as they are affectionately called, is more advanced.
