yngling n. A mystery to anyone without an interest in sailing before those Games, the boat drew headlines after the success of the trio—whose sporting prowess was augmented by good looks—and suddenly there was great interest in the racing of what the International Yngling Association describes as an “agreeable cross between a planing dinghy and a keelboat.“ (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
mad-dogging n. According to all of the news reports two young men met outside of a downtown bar and tried to stare each other down. In Albuquerque this is called “mad-dogging.” The end result of this “mad-dogging” is that one of the young men pulled a pistol and shot the other man in the chest killing him on the spot. Getting killed because you stared at someone? Now that is just too much. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
dark pool n. “The situation now is that the CFTC is sitting there looking at one screen, one piece of the picture, which is whatever is happening on the exchanges. Meanwhile, an increasing volume in dollars is taking place in the form of over-the-counter activity where no one can see it… there is still a blind spot with respect to the true over-the-counter activity that is going on, which represents billions and billions of dollars.” This trading in what the industry calls “dark pools” amounts to a third of all commodities activity, easily enough for the manipulators to remain hidden. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
scooping technician n. On this run, the “scooping technicians,“ as they call themselves, have netted a fair amount of dog poo. This niche job has been a successful venture for Mr. Roberts, who owns Doggie Biz Pet Waste Removal with his wife. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
POD n. The mother can designate beneficiaries of the account who will receive the monies in the account upon her death. These accounts are often called “Payable on Death,“ or “POD” accounts. They operate similar to an insurance policy. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
flugtag n. More than 30 human-powered aircraft designs will take part in Red Bull’s Flugtag competition on Aug. 3, behind the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau. It’s part air-show spectacle and part Jackass stunt. Flugtag is a German word meaning “flying day,“ as in the day you fly off to holiday. The competitions have been held in major cities around the world. Teams of five people must build and “fly” a contraption with a maximum wingspan of nine metres and a maximum weight of 200 kilograms. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
compellance n. The truth is that most political observers in Pakistan have become knee-jerk and non-cerebral, giving Pakistan’s enemy a handle through what is called “compellance”: get the enemy to do what it wants to do for self-destruction. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
pink yuan n. Last year, a study claimed that, by 2015, Chinese women would control $260 billion of the country’s purchasing power (there is even a name for it: the pink yuan). (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
deadman n. The church purchased an old school building, and member Gordon Ethridge moved it to the site on logs—with a little help from a “deadman,“ Gatliff said. Another log, commonly called a deadman, was buried out ahead of the building and used as an anchor during the moving process. “They would pull it down to the deadman, then they would rebury it,“ Gatliff explained. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
fuel poor adj. It is estimated that by Christmas 6m households will be defined as “fuel poor”—spending more than 10% of their income on gas and electricity. The prospect of the government fulfilling its 2001 pledge to eradicate fuel poverty now looks about as likely as Gordon Brown winning the next election. (Aug. 7, 2008) [full citation…]
