Lexus lane n. Grabauskas said he was studying high-occupancy toll lanes, also known as “HOT” lanes or “Lexus lanes,” where drivers pay for the privilege of using a dedicated lane at rush hour. (Jun. 3, 2004) [full citation…]
iso n. Long throws are the ticket downwind, while short throws are dictated upwind. Isolation plays, or “iso’s” in the football and Ultimate parlance, often produce scores. (Jun. 3, 2004) [full citation…]

fantasista n. Italy’s football jargon has a special term: “fantasista,” to sum up the qualities of players like Francesco Totti. It takes lots of inventiveness and class to be classified a fantasista—a player who can stun the opponents with a defence-splitting pass, an exquisite lob, or a sublime piece of skill. (Jun. 1, 2004) [full citation…]
desenrascanço n. “Desenrascanço” (you read that ‘the-zen-rascan-so’) is simply a slang word for the slacker art of coming up with some last-minute solution for a problem—and as a rule the solution will end up doing more harm than simply avoiding the problem (unless avoiding the problem is exactly that last-minute solution—a very common scenario). What I don’t get is the article’s connection between “desenrascanço” and those fake academic “traditions” which consist in the ritual bullying of freshmen. Unfortunately “desenrascanço” has far greater scope, and it is a true defining quality of being Portuguese—even perhaps what separates us from the Spanish. (May. 31, 2004) [full citation…]
beshert n. I am sad today because my Mother’s Day gift from our beshert child’s birth country’s gift to us was a demand for yet another document, one we have sent many times… Beshert is yiddish for destiny or soul mate. (May. 31, 2004) [full citation…]
ferkakdeh n. Ferkakdeh is Yiddish for “completely fucked.” (May. 31, 2004) [full citation…]
