Dictionary definition of “party ball”

party ball

n. a five-gallon container of beer, one-third the size of a keg (in the U.S.). Subjects: ,
Editorial Note: According to numerous articles in the Washington Post, Party Ball was also the now outdated product name for “a lightweight plastic sphere that totes six large plates, small cups, dessert plates and bowls and a single serving tray. Each half of the outside shell doubles as a serving bowl.” It seems to have been primarily sold at the department store chain Hecht’s.
Citations: 1988 AP (July 11) “Brewer Introduces 5-Gallon Container”: Adolph Coors Co. announced Monday it will introduce a five-gallon disposable container of beer called “Party Ball” later this month. The container, which will contain Coors or Coors Light, is packaged in a box with a plastic liner to hold ice. It dispenses the equivalent of 55 12-ounce cans, officials said in a statement. 2000 David DeKok Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) (Feb. 4) “Pennsylvania-Based Internet Auction Site Targets College Students”: In State College, beer distributor W.R. Hickey is auctioning a Budweiser Party Ball. 2006 Marc Giauque KSL.com (Salt Lake City, Utah) (June 13) “UHP Targets Illegal Alcohol, Fireworks Near Wyoming Border”: Then a stop on a car with no front plate, the goods in the back-seat, the trooper asks the driver to remove them. “Let me go back and run your license.” Several cases, and what’s called a party-ball are pulled from the back-seat.
