Citations: 1994 [Keerthi Y. McIntosh] Usenet: rec.crafts.textiles.quilting (Nov. 28) “Finished: 1st Foundation piecing ‘quilt’”: I tried to “fussy” cut the background to maintain the “lines” created by the geometric shapes, but I found it difficult to keep the fabric perfectly positioned. 1997 [Vaiva A. Bichnevicius] Usenet: rec.crafts.textiles.quilting (July 22) “impressionist quilting exchange”: Impressionist quilts entail a lot of fussy-cut squares (for flowers and such). 2000 Jeanne Gustafson Spokesman Review (Spokane, Wash.) (Jan. 14) “Pictures? Perfect Photo-transfer techniques allow you to incorporate the family into home decor” p. D3: “Fussy cut” is quilters lingo for cutting out a small piece of fabric or an interesting design. 2003 Susan McKelvey Fancy Feathered Friends for Quilters (Mar. 1) p. 17: The term “fussy-cutting” has come into favor for describing the art of cutting out desired portions of a fabric, usually small areas, to create specific effects in a quilt.…Take time to look at fabrics for their potential for appliqué elements, and then “fussy-cut” them out of their backgrounds. 2003 World Wide Quilting Page (July 21) “What a fussy cut square is and how it is done?”: Fussy cut means that you take a particular pattern out of the piece of fabric.…It is a block that is cut so that the motif on the fabric is centered in the square. For example, if you’re doing florals, you would cut the square so that the flower is centered on the block. You are “fussy-cutting” it rather than just rotary cutting strips and the motifs (or parts thereof) just fall wherever they fall.
