Dictionary definition of “convenio”

convenio

n. a convenience store sited with a gas (petrol) fueling station. Subjects: , , , ,
Etymological Note: The first line of such stores in India, emulating shop-and-fuel stations in the Americas and Europe, were opened by the Indian Oil Company (IOC) and branded as “Convenios.” Later, competing fueling stations adopted the concept and made the name generic. As of autumn 2004, enthusiasm for the concept was reported to be waning.
Citations: 1997 FT Asia Intelligence Wire (Sept. 23) “Indian Oil Corp-Citibank credit card in pipeline” (in Mumbai): Apart from paying for fuel and lubricants, the card can also be used to buy a whole range of products at various Convenio stores located at select IOC petrol stations. 2000 S. Muthiah The Hindu (India) (June 26) “Madras miscellany”: “Convenio” the convenience store, a mini supermarket, is one of the added facilities now in many locations in Madras. 2004 Sangita Joshi The Hindu Business Line (India) (Oct. 21) “The search for an Indian retail model” p. 2: I have not yet been able to figure out the role that these convenios play in our Indian scenario. Sure, out West they’re an established retail format, their raison d’etre being convenience of shopping (while you fill fuel), you buy your tobacco/ soft drink/ beer …or if you’ve run out of eggs, you just drive down to your closest convenience store, and pick them up—no wandering through massive aisles of merchandise, no standing in long lines—sure, you pay a little extra, but then it’s convenient. 2005 Pummy Kaul, Ravi Krishnan Financial Express (Mumbai, India) (Sept. 10) “Shop shooters”: Convenios:24X7 convenience stores situated close to homes to generate high footprints. Convenios carry a limited stock of daily use goods with a special focus on food products eg. In & Out petrol pump outlets.
