baulk v. The guys in the Cadillac were known to him as serial baulkers (as in baulking insurance companies), and they earned a living—sort of—by ploughing their battering-ram Cadi into the soft areas of cars being used by wholly legal drivers such as me.…Illegal baulking is such a big industry in the States that some of the offenders are funded and encouraged by wealthy criminal bosses and unscrupulous legal professionals to go out in old bangers and deliberately create “accidents” [EnglishAutomobiles & TransportationCrime & Prisons] [full cite] (Jan. 17, 2006)
beam blade n. What about your wiper blades? We are seeing fewer cars with blades in brackets that resemble a bridge. Snow has a way of jamming the bracket hinges, leaving only a narrow contact patch with the windshield. Winter blades that prevent this are essentially regular blades with a thin rubber overcoat to keep the snow out. More blades have an internal tensioning system to keep them in contact with the curve of the glass. Sometimes these are called beam blades as they resemble an I-beam. bear jam n. The driver of the SUV stopped and jumped out, leaving the door open and blocking the one-lane road as he chased with his camera after the black furry figure ambling through a field of golden grasses.…“Bear jams”—or “bar jams” in local parlance—are common on the 11-mile, one-way loop road through the Cades Cove section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, although rangers would prefer that you don’t block the road or hassle the wildlife. big red truck n. “I figured it was just a matter of time before somebody came running out of the big red truck with a box full of plates,” said crew chief Todd Parrott, using the garage area parlance for NASCAR’s headquarters. black plate n. This impulse to crush manifested itself at first in remote control cars before it found expression in karts. Novice racers begin in what is known as the black plate category.
