Chateau Migraine n. The director general of one of Egypt’s largest wine-makers, the Lebanese Andre Hadji-Thomas, smiles as he remembers his 1998 visit to the Gianaclis estate, put up for sale 30 years after its nationalisation by then president Gamal Abdel Nasser: “After uncorking a bottle, the Egyptian wine-maker of the estate revealed to us that, despite 20 years in the profession, as a good Muslim he had never touched a drop of wine!” Not surprisingly this epoch of Egyptian wine-making was dubbed “Chateau Migraine.” [ ] [full cite] (Dec. 17, 2007)
Chillary n. Her voice faltered, her eyes glistened, and she appeared to teeter on the brink of tears.…A performance. Playing the gender card. A desperate, transparent ploy by “Chillary” to gain last-minute votes. [ ] [full cite] (Jan. 27, 2008)
Colobama n. Trotting out the pejorative “Colobama” to describe Colorado’s poor ranking on some quality of life yardstick generally evokes snickers of derision until one realizes that we really are getting the pants beat off of us on a whole host of social measures. [ ] [full cite] (Aug. 24, 2007)
Counterfeit Alley n. A shopper can find pretty much anything else here, too, on this strip of Broadway a few blocks south of 34th Street. Sports jerseys. Sunglasses. Perfume. DVD’s fresh—maybe a little too fresh—from the big screen. Name-brand sneakers that are probably not. And, of course, Louis Vuitton handbags of uncertain provenance. The police call it Counterfeit Alley, and say it is the city’s top haven for knockoff, no-name, and flat-out phony goods. [ ] [full cite] (Sep. 3, 2007)
Cow Hampshire n. Growing up in Dover, Knowles received his undergraduate degree at UNH, and despite teaching at the University of Idaho, he eventually returned to his roots. The state he dubs, “Cow Hampshire.” [ ] [full cite] (Mar. 7, 2007)
Da U. n. Donna Shalala, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, serves as University of Miami’s president. How often does she refer to the institution as “Da U.”? [ ] [full cite] (Nov. 30, 2006)
Dearbornistan n. Sharia is just around the corner. Dearbornistan is right in our midst. They want to kill us. It’s in the koran. [ ] [full cite] (Oct. 7, 2007)
Detroit Three n. Those structural problems include high labor costs and factory capacity designed for a larger market share. dirty dirty n. OutKast are so weird I gave up on getting a handle on Aquemini, which is when it started bubbling in my brain. I love how they represent the dirty-dirty with more juice than Zeus, rocking the ill mbira and letting Erykah Badu shake that load off with trunkloads of booty-club bass.
