Dictionary definition of “angryphone”

angryphone

n. a person who feels marginalized as a member of Québec’s English-speaking minority. Subjects: , ,
Etymological Note: A jocular play on the word “anglophone.”
Citations: 1995 Monique Beaudin Gazette (Montreal, Canada) (Dec. 9) “Grass-roots groups sprout from referendum ashes” p. B1: “There are a lot of people out there that I’m calling angryphones,” said Kirkland businessman Carlos Roldan, 46. “When (Premier Jacques) Parizeau blamed us for the No vote, it was a watershed moment. All of us—anglophones, allophones, ethnics—we all became angryphones.” 1996 Don Macpherson Gazette (Montreal, Canada) (Mar. 9) “Invitation to hear Bouchard is a hot ticket” p. B5: Exactly how are good, loyal Canadian anglos supposed to behave at a speech by the separatist Antichrist, with their fellows watching on television?…Do they applaud? And if so, how warmly can they do so without being called quislings or sellouts by the “angryphones?” 1996 Mark Clayton Christian Science Monitor (Boston, Massachusetts) (Nov. 19) “In Quebec’s Battle of Tongues, One Man Lashes Out at French-Only Rules, Secession” p. 1: That rarest of breeds in the largely French-speaking province, Mr. Galganov is a bilingual Quebecker who rallies for the rights of English speakers (Anglophones) and against secession from Canada. That makes him an “angry-phone” to moderates in both camps, who tag him a threat to cool compromise. 2007 Gazette (Montreal, Canada) (Apr. 14) “And another thing…”: Then the producer of the thriller series 24—starring onetime Canadian Kiefer Sutherland—claimed he was considering a fan’s suggestion to use some Quebec terrorists as the next foes for 24’s hero Jack Bauer. Who? Angryphones? Sellers of poutine? City blue-collar workers? Surely Jack can find somebody more menacing to torture.
